Breaking Monolith to Microservices

One of the most common topics when talking about Microservices is breaking monolith to Microservices. A lot of organizations trying to go this path of converting their existing legacy monolith to modern Microservices system. There are various reasons for such migrations and we have to be prepared for such requests.

Many times organization wants to improve the current system and it believes that migrating to Microservices will do just that. This is not always the case as we have discussed earlier.

If you decided to go with the change, then you must make sure its is thoroughly planned and must be performed very carefully.

Why would we want to do that? Why would we want to change perfectly working system and tear it apart? There must be a very good reason for that.

Lets review some of the reasons,

This is probably the major factor in any decision to go to Microservices, whether with a new system or with an existing one. Updating a monolith is always painful and usually quite a slow process.

Microservices bring to the table, the promise of short and efficient update cycles. Often bring it down from once in few months to multiple times in a single day. When a monolith system requires frequent changes, migrating to Microservices is definitely a logical step.

Another aspect often we discussed about Microservices is the modularization of the system.

As the first attribute of Microservices is componentization via services or in other words, lets make the system as modular as possible.
