The Final Flight Out

Leaving a war is never pretty, but Thank Goodness I’m here to write about it

The last plane taxied down the runway with only moments to spare. Rockets were landing closer and several planes had already been hit before they could leave the gate.

It was one way to leave Viet Nam. Perhaps not the preferred way, but better than leaving in a wooden box, like several of my squad members.

We had just finished our year of deployment in the Mekong Delta and the Viet Cong had surprised us with an ambush as we were loading our equipment onto the helicopters.

Four of my best friends were sprayed with fire from AK-47’s. The VC weren’t very accurate with their aim, but accuracy isn’t necessary if you have enough ammunition and can fire 600 rounds a minute.

Three of the four were with me on this flight. I rested my feet on their box as our plane lifted off and crossed over the Gulf of Tonkin.

I was twice lucky that day. First, with the help of a friend in a place to pull strings, I was able to get on a flight six weeks before my scheduled departure and, most importantly, I was sitting with my feet on the box, not lying lifeless inside.

Watching the tv news coverage of our frantic withdrawal from Afghanistan brought back those memories and left me with a sickening feeling in my stomach.

Once again, we are bringing home another generation of young men and women from a foreign war that made us no safer and brought us no benefit other than enriching the defense contractors that produce more and better ways for people to kill one another.
