The Home That Knows No Sorrow

A story of searching

There was a terrible earthquake on a small island. Hundreds of homes were destroyed, and thousands of people were killed in the disaster. One woman was beside herself with grief when she came back from a walk in the forest to find her entire home gone. She spent days sifting through the rubble, trying to help people, and searching in vain for her kids.

Weeks passed, and they were no longer finding living survivors. The woman realized she was all alone and felt utterly engulfed by sorrow. She kept busy helping to clean up after the disaster, but each day, it was harder and harder to drag herself out of the shelter to show up.

She was so depressed some of the other volunteers took her to a local shaman for help. She begged him to take away her sorrow so that she could live again, and he promised that he would. She just had one small task to complete.

“Dear sister, find a home that knows no sorrow. And ask them for a single teaspoon of sugar and bring it back to me. With sugar from the home that knows no sorrow, I will soak up all of your grief.”

The woman was relieved. She set out with a renewed purpose. She went from home to home, asking them if they knew of such a place as the shaman spoke of, “A home that knows no sorrow.”

She was directed to the church. But the priest told her he knew much sorrow since he had lost his dear brother in the earthquake and many of his parishioners.

She went to the homes of each government official. They lived in large modern houses that survived the earthquake, but they told her they also had sorrow in their homes.

There were stories of disease and death in every place she visited. She decided this island was full of sorrow, and she would have to venture farther from her homeland if she wanted to find a home that knew no sorrow.

She was fortunate enough to get on a ship to the mainland, where she landed in a vast city. Here there were millions…
