Being Bilingual Gives you Superpowers

Your brain is practically begging you to start learning a new language…

Sorry to disappoint all you hard-core marvel fans, but when I’m talking ‘superpower’ I don’t mean the ‘flying in the sky or ‘shooting spider webs’ superpower.

I mean the actual superpower that can be unlocked from within our brains. It all comes down to finally learning that language you so badly want to speak so you can impress your friends.

When thinking about learning a new language, we often feel it is impossible because we’re too old and our brains don’t work the same as children so we squash the idea before taking any drastic action.

Quite honestly, to think so negatively about one’s capability is both tragic and stupid. Firstly, being so defeatist is depressing and secondly, science proves you wrong.

Yes, it’s true that adults don’t have the brain plasticity of a baby that allows them to learn languages faster but adult brains are more adaptable to new learning than previously thought.

Human brains are hardwired for language learning and this malleability makes language learning a possible feat. So wipe those tears away and start using Duolingo again.

What is more enticing about learning a new language is that it reroutes brain networks which significantly improve memory and cognitive function.

For decades, researchers have openly wondered if we all have an untapped hidden genius within us because of the brain’s remarkable ability to constantly reshape itself when it comes to learning or memory.

The internet is littered with brain exercise games and puzzles that claim to improve memory, cognition, and creativity. But what really works and is backed by research is to learn a new language.
