One year after my I started to code. Where I am at now.

I started coding in Feb 2017. This month I got a job referral from a friend. My friend recently told me that his company has an opening for front-end development and he thinks I would be fit for the…

Time Management With SFSU Students

In an interview made with SFSU students we proved that they did not manage their time wisely. SFSU student, Chris Garcia ’20, explains to us that he usually had a lot of homework but would rather “spend most of my time with friends” leading him to failing classes, falling behind, and not meeting the four year graduation mark. In worse cases, students slack off so much it leads them to drop out. Andy Jimenez was set to graduate with the class of 2021 at SFSU explains how excessive “drinking and smoking before and after class” led him to completely falling behind and dropping out. Sometimes personal issues can also cause a student to delay their graduation status especially when living away from home for the first time, Michelle Gutierrez, explains how personal issues such as “ a break up and living away from home for the first time” held her back. Gutierrez says that she was “unfocused” in class due to a recent break up. Gutierrez also stated that she was used to her mother’s help and hospitality which led her to get depressed and also fall behind. Personally, as a first time freshman, I can relate to missing home the most. This past month has been the toughest because I have began learning how to do everything on my own. I have learned that is very difficult to live with people who are very different from you.

I often stay up very late doing homework because I begin doing it very late. I’m always tired due to my poor sleeping schedule and bad habits. I figured that I couldn’t continue these actions so I made a schedule to help me keep track of my time and also to manage the time I spend using my phone for things other than school. I created a weekly schedule where I write everything that I have to complete that week and where I also time myself for every activity so that I have enough time to do everything. I also color coded each activity by how important they are and by how exciting they are to me.

Before I made an electronic schedule, I would often get carried away doing other things such as watching reality tv shows on Hulu or watching conspiracy theories on Youtube. Soon after I was left with tons of reading and writing to do for my classes, and that was when I struggled and stressed myself out because I had very little time to complete the assignments. An electronic schedule was difficult in a sense because I was so used to leaving everything last minute and it’s kind of tough changing bad habits. I learned that the wiser I used my time the less stressed I was. Although it was tough it was also very beneficial because I can get more things done in one day and also have more time for myself.

The electronic schedule changed my bad habits. However, I think a schedule written on paper would have been more effective for me because I am able to write things down, which helps me remember them more than typing them. Using a paper written schedule also drives me away from using my phone so much. Often times when I pick up my phone for one thing I always get carried away and look at other things. I realized that I can finish all of my assignments as long as I teach myself to use my time wisely and remove myself from spending so much time on social media. Also, because I am living on my own now I need time to do things around my home, grocery shop and cook for myself. As I learn to manage my time when it comes to academics I am also learning to manage my time in a more personal aspect such as personal growth. To make my college experience more joyful and less stressful I will maintain a handwritten schedule or a to do list to keep track of my time and maintain a weekly routine to allow myself to finish my assignments and also have time for myself.
