Anna Haining Bates was a notable Canadian woman who stood 2.41 meters tall. She was one of the tallest females in the room. Her parents were Scottish immigrants and were of ordinary height.Anna Swan was born in New Annan, Nova Scotia, in the town of Mill Brook. At birth, she weighed 7.26 kg. In the summer of 1879 and again in the spring of 1880, Bateses toured with the W.W. Cole Circus. Bates and her husband owned a farm, and she lived her tranquil years there. In 1877, she became a member of the local Baptist church and began attending services with her husband.
Bates died of heart failure in her sleep on August 5, 1888, the day before she turned 42 years old, at home. During her lifetime, no one was able to figure out why she was so tall. Because X-rays were not invented until 1895, it was impossible to tell whether he had a pituitary tumor.
