Paris to Nice Day 2

111.8 miles of head wind from Auxerre to Chalon sur Saone

This morning started a little earlier as it was a longer day, everyone at breakfast seemed ok, bit tired and stiff muscles maybe but generally in good spirits. Again we ate the Campanile out of most of their food. Whilst we sorted ourselves out to get ready to go, the support crew had a good chat with some of the British Motorcyclists also staying in our hotel. Different groups of cyclists set off at different times after working out who to potentially cycle with yesterday. We were off

Today was tough, I am not gonna lie and I am very tired writing this now, apologies for bad spelling and grammar! It was a bit stop start getting out of town in the rush hour, and for the rest of the day it felt like one long drag along a busyish road, and into a head wind all the way, it was also a barmy 29 degrees. There were some respite moments, when we dropped into a couple of lovely villages but if I could draw the road today it would look like this……

We decided before we left, that there would definitely be a few coffee stops before lunch, because lunch was at a very long 78 miles away in Arnay de duc. First coffee shop stop for Nigel & I was in Avallon with the group called the misfits. Made up of Grainger, Joe, Will, Simon, Dan and I believe Kempo, but he is a bit like the band member that leaves and comes back again. Joe mentioned that he had a lovely pad in Nice that he wasn’t staying in because his Mum had given it to one of her mates for the week :-).

Some of the Misfits

We were caught by another group after coffee and rode with them for a while, but hills were a bit too hard for me at that pace and so my lead out man (Nigel) and I backed off a bit. We caught up with G Man also known as Gino, G and Gareth Mookett and Simon Smith and carried on as a foursome looking for our next coffee shop. In the end we ran out of water so pulled over to Richard/Peter members of our support crew to get some supplies including cake, cake, more cake and sweets!! Gareth commented at that point that he would be the only rider that puts on weight during this trip as he downed 10 bags of sweets. We decided as a group we might as well crack on to lunch. Where Ed mentioned that he didn’t like eggs in France, are they from a pigeon or something!

After lunch we continued as a four hoping to smash the last 33 miles.

We had a small stop to check the air pressure in my tyre and then carried on to smash out the last 9 miles. On the way past Dawn one of our other support crew members, we heard her shout….. “Richard has broken his collar bone!” At first I thought she meant Richard one of our support crew but it wasn’t it was Rich White. Arrgggghhh. So annoying for him, but he did say I could thank him for making my blog post more interesting. We hope he will be able to join us on the rest of our journey to Nice, but would totally understand if he decided to go home to his lovely family.

We finally rolled into Chalon sur Saone 6.5 ride time hours later….and went straight for a beer. We met up with some other riders and Graham the most senior member of our team sang some Eminem from the 8 mile movie, which was quite interesting with a Scottish accent!

Graham also known as the Scottish Eminem.
