Bounce Back

We spend so much time navigating through the obstacle course life puts in front of us. We remember how difficult things were — or still are, but don’t always embrace our struggles. We sometimes look…

How we are losing reality?

What worried me so? The fact is that these special effects were not dealt with by a professional Hollywood studio, but a team of three programmers. So the technology for creating such a video clip will soon be available for pennies in the form of a service to everyone. Everyone! Videoblogers, journalists, criminals, politicians and even my neighbor. I pondered a little about the possible prospects for the development of this technology, but the next day this news as well as the mass of others before it was no longer remembered.

And here on this example it became clear to me how serious the consequences of such technologies could be. In fact an anonymous user (we know about him only his nickname deepfake) section and disgraced a famous actress using open algorithms of neural networks. Ok, pixels with sharp movements are still noticeable, but we know perfectly well that this kind of technological bugs are being quickly refined. I think that right now it’s worthwhile to take care of the problems of fakes-looks-real video.

What is a fakes-looks-real video? To begin with, it is necessary to agree that this video is indistinguishable from the real without a professional study. That is, the quality of development in which a simple visitor to YouTube will believe that it displays events that occurred in reality. Or what is happening now, if we call it stream-broadcasting (assuming that soon neural networks will learn how to generate videofakes very quickly). The next property of a reliable fake is the ability to mislead the user into reality. And this is the second property, please note. Because a fake can be signed “fake video whith Gal Gadot” and then it will be clear that this is a fake. But you can not do this. So a credible fake is a video that misleads us and does not reveal its deceptive nature. The difference between a fun fake and a fakes-looks-real as between focus and fraud.

And now let’s imagine a little bit of the world in which fakes-looks-real can be anonymously produced and distributed. Blackmail of minor children’s parents with porn fakes with their participation is the most simple crime with which we will meet in the near future. But, how do you like the fake video message from Kim Jong-un with the declaration of the US war and the launch of nuclear missiles? Or a fake video with a presidential candidate who dirtyly offends his afroamerican car driver? I think that we can come up with more dangerous scenarios for the use of public opinion. Perhaps you think that the faces of political leaders are more difficult to fake than Hollywood stars? You are wrong.

Of course, all this is only virtual objects that live only in the media environment. But the media environment thanks to Facebook, Instagram and YouTube has become our daily reality and the introduction of such a concept as a fakes-looks-real will entail a blurring of the reliability of any video. Exactly! If at least 5% of the videos are quality fakes, I will not believe anyone at all. And then how can true truth and reality break free? I do not have an answer to this question yet.

P.S. “I will not believe until I see with my own eyes” is also not a universal way out. If I did not know that Michael Jackson was gone, this performance would be quite a fakes-looks-real-in-real.
