NYPD Launching Police Drone Program

The police commissioner, James O’Neill said that this allows the “highly-trained” police force to be more responsive, and be more efficient while making everything safer in the process. Out of the 14 drones to be used, 11 of them will be used for normal tactical operations. Two of them will be equipped with 3D mapping capabilities and thermal imaging resources, while the last one will be used for training. The people piloting these drones will be licensed and certified police force members of the Technical Assistance Response Unit. The drones will not be fitted with any weapons of any sort and will not be used in patrols, warrantless searches, or enforcement of traffic laws.

The NYPD is following over 900 other state and local emergency response units across the country in utilizing drones. They consulted and researched other situations with drones to make sure that the process is a smooth one.

There are, however, people who are concerned with the use of drones in the police force. The main concern is that the drones will invade the privacy of the citizens of NYC. Some people think this will allow the NYPD to build a permanent archive of the video content from the drones and severely impact the security of the everyday citizens. There are others who are also criticizing the NYPD’s biases in previous situations with technology and profiling certain individuals.

The NYPD needs to prove to the doubters that this new move will be a useful addition to the protection of citizens and won’t interfere with the security of the people living in the city.
