Handling triggers

With everything that’s happening, I find myself getting triggered easily when I look at my facebook feed, log on to twitter, talk to people, (exist in the world) or go to a stand up show. It’s so frustrating and painful that things like comedy and writing- things that make me so happy- now are such a deep source of fear, rage and danger. Yesterday, I saw the name of an abusive person on a comedy show lineup, and my heart raced. I started feeling like I was shaking even though I was standing still. For a few seconds I thought my chest might explode. The frantic fear passed quickly, but it sucked for the few minutes while it lasted.

In the last couple years I have put a lot of work into managing my triggers, taking care of myself, and trying to bounce back from the feelings of anxiety as opposed to letting that panic ruin my entire day. I obviously still feel anxiety. (I am a human being who is conscious after all) but the feeling of danger has lessened over the years with a lot of hard work.

If you feel triggers from ptsd, I’m so sorry you have to go through that. It’s really crappy. Please know you’re really not alone. There’s so much violence and horror in the world that it’s complicated to escape the fear. There’s nothing wrong with you and it’s definitely not your fault that these feelings affect you.

How to lessen triggers’ effect on you in the long run

One important thing that has always helped me is focusing on others. The anxiety spiral barricades me inside my head. The more anxious I get, the more imprisoned inside myself I become. Talking to others, making gifts for friends, or doing a favor for someone unlocks that prison door.

Overall, I’m not a therapist or a psychologist, so I can’t give you advice that will work for everyone. I’m just telling you what worked for me. (I guess I should have mentioned that in the beginning. I wonder if it’s too late to edit now.) Honestly, if you’re reading this, just know that I care about you. Others care about you. You obviously care about yourself -even if you don’t realize it yet- because you’re reading this. Everything is awful. Be kind to yourselves and each other.
