Back to Yoga

I just got back on my mat for the first time in three months. It’s so nice. I forgot how peaceful it could be and how much I need it. Someone recommended me to read “The Gifts of Imperfection.” As I was reading it, it reminds me so much of yoga and why I started it at some point. A yoga teacher once told me that people typically turned to yoga because they felt pain somewhere, either physical or emotional, or for some people, both.

For today’s practice, as I was in my shavasana (the final resting pose), I suddenly remembered what I read in the book about compassion.

This quote just spoke to me. I thought about people in different social classes, hierarchal positions, ranks, etc. At the end of the day, we are all the same. I am no better than that homeless person down the street. And I am no worse than that billionaire who’s living in a mansion. We are equal. We all have the same capability to experience the same joy and sorrow. There’s no differences because we are all the same. I want to continue to embrace this concept. And I hope the future me will always remember this, especially when I am feeling less-than and small. I also felt a deep sense of gratitude for those people who have been supporting and encouraging me to become the better version of myself.

As class ended, I stepped out of the humid studio and backed to my pickup truck. I answered all the unread messages on my phone and continued my hustling bustling life. Sometimes, our bodies just need a break and breathe. The mat is that place for me.

For the rest of July, I want to set my intention to have more compassion.
